Also in the surroundings is the Hartebeespoort Dam which like to Vaal has become a bit of a playground for water sports enthusiasts.

Vanderbijlpark forms Gauteng’s border with the Free State along the northern banks of the Vaal River. It is an industrial city housing the largest steelworks in the Southern Hemisphere. Naturally the many residents spend their free time enjoying the river. Recreational activities such as rowing regattas, boat cruises and watersports are very popular.
